Her visit with Mattie was short and sweet, but not because they put her out. The woman enjoyed her company but a nurse came in to check on her.

He was Summer’s mysterious white boy. She knew him by the pics he’d texted. She suddenly felt uncomfortable and made up an excuse to leave.

She returned to the waiting room and seemed to be sitting there forever. Eventually, the same doctor came out. This time his face wasn’t so kind.

Without so much as a friendly greeting, he asked, “how long since she had the abortion?”

Alicia glared at the doctor baffled.

“The infection from it has seriously spread.”

Alicia continued to start him speechless.

“I’m afraid that I’m going to have to admit her. You’re lucky you didn’t wait another day.”

Seated there, lost in her thoughts, time seemed to fly by. Before she knew it, the nurse was calling, telling Alicia she was relocated.

She took slow cautious steps toward the room. She couldn’t believe this was happening.

DeeDee was wide awake as well, with a glazed over look due to the medicine.

“Tell,” she said, without looking at her. “After what I did, I know I deserve it.”

“I ain’t you,” Alicia mumbled. “Some things are better just left unsaid. Still, I’ve got to ask one question. Who’d you allow to knock you up?”

Then, without even hesitating, one name escaped her lips. “Calvin.”
